Susan Dillon-Mixed Media & Fiber Artist
I began exploring fiber due to a series of events involving a rained out hiking trip and my mother's search for a restroom (it's a long story). As long as I can remember, I have always been making things. I especially loved taking perfectly good items and using them in new and exciting ways. I spent quite a while working in mosaics which added the element of smashing those "perfectly good things" into little pieces. But it wasn't until the aforementioned hiking trip that I became aware of the world of art quilts. More recently, I have also been exploring art dolls and mixed media assembleges as well.
My work often explores the choices and identity of women, myself in particular. These choices, or lack of them, lead all women to who she is at this moment, and each one made can change her into an entirely different person. In my art quilts, I use natural themes and images to convey these ideas: birds as an imagery of choice, forests representing times of personal growth, etc. My dolls and assemblages use photos and text with found object, fabric & paper. All of it is to attempt to convey my thoughts on the idea of womanhood and my place in that culture.
